| | should battery farming have a place in a light-hearted science program? | | I'm probably totally in the wrong place here, but something I saw on TV tonight made me feel sick. It was on the program 'how do they do that?' (I think) on Discovery science. I tune in to this prog as it's normally light-hearted banter showing how day-to-day things are made, like electric guitars or auto air filters. But tonight I switched on, to see film of thousands of baby chicks being 'sorted' for the cages they were going to end their lives in. IT WAS SICK. I'm not a 'boo-hoo' animal lover, I HAVE to buy cheap chicken for my family as I can't afford free-range, and I know these animals don't lead happy lives, but I didn't realise just how inhumane it was.Problem is, this program seemed to be trading on these birds' suffering to fill in the gaps on their schedule - I guess because they're running out of things to film. A few days ago, they covered eggs in the same way. Both times there was a final disclaimer about 'If you don't like what you've just seen, buy free-range or go vegetarian,' but the feeling I got was that this definitely was NOT an exercise in alleviating animal suffering by showing the truth behind intensive farming. The 'yee ha!' attitude of the... | |
| | Automated check outs- love them or hate them? | | One store in our area has 4 automated check-outs, which I admit I generally use, but the rest of the check-outs are manned by a human cashier. No other stores in our area have these check-outs and I do find myself occasionally wishing they did.I went to our local home improvement chain store today. They have been doing some MAJOR remodeling in there- trying to prepare for the other major chain store opening up across the street son, I'm sure.[em]wink[/em] Anyway, they finally put in conveyor belts (they couldn't do this 9 months ago before I was there shopping for cart-fulls upon cart-fulls of building supplies?!?) Anyway, the only job the cashier has now, apparently, is to scan the items from the first conveyor belt to the second one- the receipt even prints by itself and comes out under the credit card machine (which, as it is everywhere now, the customer does themselves too). The really odd thing is that the cashier is standing on the same side of the conveyor belt as the customer. Almost in the way. It occurred to me that I wonder if they are phasing out the cashiers on all or most of their check-outs...? They are still building the rest of them, so I don't know yet if... | |
| | Eating out. | | As some of you know I'm fast approaching my 30th birthday and have promised my two boys that they can take me out for a meal (guess who has to give them the money though?! lol).
The trouble is I have no idea were to go. It seems that most places are like conveyor belts these days unless you want to go somewere very expensive. They sit you down, feed you your food, then out you go please we need the table!
This really annoys me as if I had wanted fast food treatment I would go to McDonalds!
If I am going for a meal I like to be able to take my time and relax not feel like they can't wait for me to leave!
Does anyone else have this kind of experience?
Do you think we have lost the tradition of a good meal? Sitting down with people we care about and enjoying good food and good company?
What happened to the days of making an evening out of a nice meal out? | |
